AND WHEREAS THE CAUSES OF MOST CHILDHOOD CANCERS ARE UNKNOWN AND WHEREAS ONE IN 1 IN 285 CHILDREN IN THE UNITED STATES WILL BE DIAGNOSED BY THEIR 20TH BIRTHDAY, AND WHEREAS THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 440,000 CHILDREN ON ACTIVE TREATMENT AT ANY GIVEN TIME, AND WHEREAS THE AVERAGE AGE OF A DIAGNOSIS IS SIX YEARS OLD COMPARED TO 66 YEARS OLD FOR ADULTS WITH CANCER DIAGNOSIS, AND WHEREAS 80% OF CHILDHOOD CANCER PATIENTS ARE DIAGNOSED, WHEREAS ON AVERAGE THERE HAVE BEEN A 0.6% INCREASE IN IN CANCER PER YEAR IN SINCE THE MID 1970S, RESULTING IN AN OVERALL INCREASE OF 24% OVER THE LAST 40 YEARS. THE MOTHER OF LENA BAUGHMAN. ON FEBRUARY 27TH, 2023, OUR 14 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER WAS DIAGNOSED WITH ETMA EMBRYONAL TUMOR WITH MULTILAYERED ROSETTES. A GRADE FOUR BRAIN TUMOR. SHE UNDERWENT TWO SURGERIES AND SEVERAL OTHER PROCEDURES AND STARTED CHEMOTHERAPY WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF DIAGNOSIS. LENA WAS TOO YOUNG FOR RADIATION AT THE TIME OF DIAGNOSIS. IN HER CHEMOTHERAPY, TREATMENTS WERE OUTDATED AND INEFFECTIVE. THEY FAILED HER. WE FAILED HER. I'M SORRY. IT'S OKA.

OUR DAUGHTER FOUGHT FOR HER LIFE FOR FIVE MONTHS BEFORE SHE LEFT US TO BE WITH THE LORD AT ONLY 19 MONTHS OLD. WE WERE BLIND TO WHAT CHILDHOOD CANCER TRULY WAS. WE DIDN'T KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS. WE DIDN'T KNOW THE FACTS OR STATISTICS. WE KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT. WE THOUGHT IT WAS RAR.

BUT CHILDHOOD CANCER IS NOT RARE. IT SHOULD NOT BECOME. IT SHOULD NOT COME TO OUR CHILDREN, OUR LOVED ONES BEING AFFECTED BEFORE WE ARE EDUCATED ON THE FACTS OR LACK OF FUNDING AND RESEARCH THAT FOLLOWS. I BELIEVE IF THERE WERE MORE FUNDING AND BETTER TREATMENT OPTIONS. LENA WOULD STILL BE HERE TODAY. IF EVERYONE WAS AWARE OF CHILDHOOD CANCER AND THE DEVASTATING IMPACT IT HAS ON HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN PER YEAR. IT WOULD SAVE MANY, MANY PRECIOUS AND IRREPLACEABLE LITTLE LIVES. OUR CHILDREN NEED US TO ADVOCATE FOR THEM. THEY NEED US TO DO OUR PART AND CHANGE THIS CRUEL REALITY THAT ARE THAT THEY ARE FORCED TO LIVE OR DIE THROUGH. 4% OF FEDERAL FUNDING IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. IT IS CRUCIAL THAT WE DEMAND CHANGE. LENA CONTINUES TO FIGHT HER BATTLE THROUGH RESEARCH, AND WE BELIEVE SHE WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE OF PEDIATRIC BRAIN TUMORS SOMEDAY. MOVING ON TO THE, PAVING PROGRAM, WE HAVE A CURB REPLACEMENT CONTINUING ON PALM DRIVE AND MILFORD ESTATES THIS WEEK, AND OUR CONTRACTOR IS HOPING TO START MILLING AND PAVING OPERATIONS ON CREEKVIEW DRIVE AND TARRAGON DRIVE LATER THIS WEEK. ANOTHER UPDATE ON THE PAVING PROGRAM. I'VE RECEIVED SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BUMP OUTS ON FOURTH STREET, SO FOURTH STREET IS WITHIN THE PAVING PROGRAM. THIS YEAR. SO THE ONE THING WE'RE LOOKING TO DO IS KIND OF SOFTEN THOSE EDGES. JUST SO IF A IF A VEHICLE DOES HIT THE CORNER, THEY'RE NOT GETTING SLASHED TIRES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. AND IT, THE STATE WILL PAY THE MAJORITY OF IT, BUT WE'RE LOOKING AT 5 OR $6000 PER CHILD. YEAH. FOR EVERY CHILD THAT COMES INTO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. SO THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE TO KEEP IN MIND.
